A Better Location

Due to the generosity of Mary Jo and Dave Livingston, we were able to acquire a 2.75-acre property at 70th & Highway 2 in south Lincoln. This location will be a highly visible and easily accessible site for visitors coming from all directions.
A Green Building
The new Animal Adoption Center will be constructed to meet all LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building standards when possible.
Plans include:
*A kennel cleansing system that reduces water consumption and enhances cleaning and disinfecting of kennels
*Sensors that control heating, ventilation and lighting
*Dual-paned windows for insulation
*Highly efficient insulation of outer walls using precast concrete panel and foam insulation
*Xeriscape landscaping to reduce water consumption and maintence of the outdoor areas
What Will Happen to the Old Shelter?
The current Humane Society building on Park Boulevard will continue to accept pets turned in by families who can no longer care for them. It will also house lost and stray animals brought in by city and county officials, as well as those brought in by others in the community in emergency situations. After a waiting period, pets that are not re-united with their owners and are suitable for adoption will move to the Animal Adoption Center as a first step in their journey to a new home.
Other Benefits of the New Adoption Center
Animals that are injured, ill and temperamentally difficult will have a greater opportunity to enter the adoption program through additional training and time.
Expanded pet education will help pet owners, who might otherwise surrender their pets because of behavioral problems, learn how to handle these situations and thereby establish and/or maintain a stronger bond with their animal companions.
Sanctuary boarding of animals will be expanded in cooperation with Friendship Home, St. Monica's, Voices of Hope, and the American Red Cross. We provide free of charge temporary boarding of pets for women escaping domestic abuse, individuals seeking drug and/or alcohol rehab, and people driven from their homes by fire or other emergencies.
