Services
- Adoptions/Veterinary Care
Unwanted animals find new homes through the adoption program.
Animals selected for adoption are examined by shelter veterinary staff, vaccinated, microchipped, tested for heartworm, feline leukemia and receive other care in being prepared for the adoption program. Injured animals received at the shelter are also provided with intervention type care to alleviate their pain and discomfort.
- Population Control
The surplus of unwanted animals can be prevented by sterilization. Capital Humane Society sterilizes every dog, cat and rabbit that will go into the adoption program.
- Lost and Found
Many lost animals are reunited with their grateful owners through the diligent efforts of shelter staff to match lost reports with incoming animals.
- Prevention of Cruelty
Animal abuse is a crime. Through education, legislative efforts and assistance provided to law enforcement officials, Capital Humane Society plays a role in prevention of neglect and abuse.
- Volunteer Program
Many volunteers help with a variety of work tasks at the shelter. Through their efforts animals receive additional attention that would not be possible without this program.
- Foster Care
Animals that are too young, have injuries or other issues that prevent them from going into the adoption program immediately can go to foster homes where they receive care until they can enter the adoption program.
- Animal Assisted Activity
Pets are good for people and can improve mental, physical and social well being. Volunteers take adoption pets to long term care facilities with the goal of enhancing the lives of people in institutional settings.
- Humane Education
If the animals of tomorrow are to be treated well we must teach people kindness, not just to animals, but also to fellow human beings. Thousands of children and adults hear our presentations each year. If you would like to schedule a tour of the shelter or have someone speak to your group contact our education department at 402-441-4483.
- Puppy Kindergarten
